[About Us] [History] [Faith Statement] [Staff]

In December 1962, at the request of several families living in this community, the first services were conducted which led to becoming a mission known as Point Baptist Chapel.

On August 25, 1963, the Chapel was organized into a self-supporting church with twenty-four charter members (some of these members are still active in 1999) and the mission was named Point Baptist Church. The first services were held in an old wooden building located on Sandview Drive off Innerarity Point Road. A brick sanctuary was completed in 1969 and a new educational facility was occupied in 1975. These were built by members of the congregation.

G.C. Kellum, Jr. was called as first pastor and served until November, 1978. Danny Andrews was called as pastor in February, 1979 and served until August 1984. Bryan Smith was called as interim pastor in December, 1984. In March, 1985 he was called as full-time pastor. He served as pastor until September, 1989.

An addition was made to the educational building in 1985, enlarging the Fellowship Hall to twice its previous size and adding two additional Sunday School classrooms. Then in 1987 the church realized that in order to minister to the growing community, it would need to relocate on a larger parcel of land. On November 1, 1987, the church voted, unanimously, to purchase property located on the south side of Innerarity Point Road. The corner began on Monterey Road and continued 690 feet east on Innerarity Point Road. This included five acres, and the new land was paid off in 1994.

In order to more easily identify the location of the church, the name "Point Baptist Church" was changed to "Innerarity Point Baptist Church" in July, 1988. With the realization that we needed additional Sunday School rooms, a Sunday School wing was added in 1992. This includes eight classrooms, a media library, and two restrooms.

Felton Griffin, from Anchorage, Alaska, served as Interim Pastor from November, 1989, to April, 1990. He challenged the congregation to "get the church up the road, where people could see it!" In June, 1990, Phillip Rowan was called as pastor and served until July, 1991. At that time, Ron Banta was called as Interim Pastor in August, 1991. In February, 1992 Ron was called to serve as full-time pastor and led the church until March, 1996.

The AWANA Program was begun at I.P.B.C. in September, 1993.

In September, 1995, plans were presented for Phase I of the new church building and the church voted unanimously to accept the plans and to proceed. Then in July 1996, Wallace Nichols was called as Pastor and as of August 4 he began to lead our people in New Testament growth principles and processes. Our purpose is to be a shining light in a dark world by keeping the Great Commandment and carrying out the Great Commission. To that end, a groundbreaking service was held on the new church property on October 27, 1996, and work was begun on the new worship center with an anticipated completion date in the Spring of 1997.
